Inclusion

This is demonstrated by including the widest array of groups, perspectives and methods of action possible in order to foster an environment where all sides are considered as a matter of fact, not convenience. Highlighted by making a full effort to empathize with and seek to remove barriers to full participation and a sense of belonging and allowing room for flexibility and cooperation.

Discrimination

Workplace Diversity

Diverse workplaces are composed of employees with varying characteristics including, but not limited to, religious and political beliefs, gender, race, ethnicity, education, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, and geographic location. These employees serve in a variety of key positions up and down the hierarchy

Unconscious/Implicit Bias

Social stereotypes, beliefs, or value systems regarding other individuals, usually made automatically. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one’s tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing.

Ex.- Close your eyes and picture a doctor, teacher, drug dealer, dentist, college president, war veteran and an actor. What are their genders? Their ethnicity? Their age?

Microaggression

“You’re a musician? Can you freestyle?

Privilege

Being followed in a nice store. The assumption that you are an employee, not a patron. Having several family members who attended college who can help you navigate the application process. “My family worked hard and look at us. Anybody can do it.” Without seeing the systematic advantages that played out.

Trigger

An experience or statement which causes a person, often unintentionally and indirectly, to recall previous trauma.

“If my child did ___ I’d definitely hit them lol.”

Tokenism

The practice of doing something (such as hiring, promoting, or otherwise lifting up a person who belongs to a minority group) to prevent criticism and provide the appearance that people are being treated fairly.

“We need to hire a __, let’s just pick one to make sure we don’t get in trouble. They won’t do much, as if they could.”
